Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area (BET)

Determines specific surface area of porous materials by measuring physical adsorption of gas molecules, typically nitrogen, at cryogenic temperatures. Adsorption isotherms are used to quantify total surface area.

What the measurement provides

  • Specific surface area
  • Data used to understand catalytic activity, gas storage, and adsorption capacity

Sample requirements

  • Check all that apply: non-radioactive, non-explosive, BET compatible, non-hazardous, non-volatile.
  • Minimum sample quantity: 1 g, in an Eppendorf tube placed in a ziplock bag.
  • Only powder, porous solid, and fiber samples are acceptable.
  • The material must be dry and thermally stable. If it melts or decomposes at low temperature, degassing before measurement may be difficult.
  • State required analysis parameters, including sample degassing temperature and time.
